I'm feeling a little feisty today so I'm posting a paragraph from a book that my husband's reading. That's not really the feisty part - it's more the fact that this will probably be a pretty controversial thought with most of my known readers. That in mind, read on...
"What I'm driving at is this; we've carried our picket signs in demonstrations, preached hellfire and brimstone on the corner of every major city in America, and boycotted major corporations in the name of God. We've ignored the simple truth of honor that literally transformed entire kingdoms in the days of Daniel and Joseph. Because Daniel and Joseph demonstrated honor to the pagan kings they served, both Pharaoh and Nebuchadnezzar eventually acknowledged the hand of God on their lives." (from "The Supernatural Ways of Royalty" by Bill Johnson & Kris Vallotton)
Whew, makes ya think doesn't it?
On a nicer note, here's the lyrics of the latest worship song burning in my heart...
Come like You promised You would
I want to surrender for good
I know that I need You
And I don't want to keep living life alone
So take my heart
And make it new
And make it true
And make it like You
Take my hands
I lift them high
They're Yours not mine to do
Do what You will....
I feel like a blind man in Your sight
I know that I'm wicked in Your eyes
So wash me and make me shine like Your Son
I want to tell everyone that You're the only One
I'm ready now, I'm ready now
I'm ready now
Do what You will....

I think that if we actually lived like Daniel or Joseph, we still wouldn't boycott major corporations because we wouldn't be driven by materialism. I don't find myself "trying" to boycot the pornography industry because I'm not purchasing the filth in the first place.
Pretty good point he's making. However, their honor was to the position above them and to the personal moral inklings of a pagan. They honored the king because they knew and trusted THE King.
Interesting (and great) points my friend.
I guess I don't understand it enough to have feelings about the quote you quoted. Maybe its still my dull post-pregnancy brain.
My contacts weren't icky - they were still in their Wal-Mart ick-proof bag. It was too cold out there to be icky too.
You are looking for a fight aren't you?!? LOL
Actually, Daniel DID boycott the food he was served, respectfully, but firmly. AND he even practiced civil disobedience by obeying God rather than the kings edict (as did Shadrack, Meshak, and Abednago). So, I'm not sure that the author chose the best example to make this point, except that ultimately it is God who humbles NOT man, and the transformation that came about in Neb.'s life was a result of God humbling him to the point of eating grass. It was totally a God thing!
I remember studying Daniel while the whole Clinton/Monica thing was going on and began dilligently praying the same for Clinton. Daniel 7 remains one of my "favorite" passages, there's just something so Awesome about God being "able to humble those who walk in pride" (and boy has he humbled me often enough).
Kari does make an insightful observation about materialism though there are times that I'm frustrated because unless we resort to subsistence agriculture and making our own clothes, we do rely on companies to supply us with even basic needs and then those companies turn over a portion of what we pay them to support causes we abhore. It's tough for me, and I've tried to find a balance between boycotting everything and yet not being so passive that I don't care what they do. We are after called to be good stewards! In all honesty, the times that I boycott NOW are times that the Spirit leads me to do so, and if He doesn't direct others in the same way, so be it. It's no skin off my nose, I really don't care where anyone else shops or what brand of brownies they buy! I just have to be convinced in my own mind and sometimes I'm so appauled by a company's policies/practices that I CAN NOT bring myself to step inside their store. I'm just sensitive about certain things, and God's okay with that!
But I'm really too tired to be feisty! HAHA!
I just came over here to say, I don't have either a Scooba or Rhoomba, but I'd be thrilled if I did, except today I was reading mixed reviews of the Scooba (like it doesn't do well in corners and only does a cursory job...). Do you have any issues with yours? Do you really like it and use it enough to justify the expense? I just HATE scrubbing floors, but I get so annoyed when they're a mess too.
Well, now that I've written a book, I'm off to bed. FYI, I did listen to the first half of that 5th Element sermon and haven't had a chance to listen to the 2nd half yet. It did provide some interesting conversation between me and my beloved! I'm glad God has it all figured out, 'cause I sure don't (even when I think I do)! :)
I meant to say "not to the personal and moral inklings of a pagan." Let he reader understand my fogginess. I'm sure that created questions in itself.....oops
I knew what you meant.
